Fremantle beats Collingwood in AFL season opener
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Fremantle beat Collingwood by 70 points and held the Magpies to their lowest-ever score against the Dockers to open the Australian Football League season with a convincing win.
Midfielder Nat Fyfe played a leading role as coach Ross Lyon’s 2013 losing grand finalists overpowered Collingwood 17.14 (116) to 5.16 (46) on a weekend when four of eight first-round matches were scheduled.
Greater Western Sydney kicked six unanswered goals to beat the Sydney Swans 15.9 (99) to 9.13 (67) on Saturday, the Giants’ first win over their city rivals in five attempts. The match included a delay of more than 20 minutes between the first two quarters because of a severe thunderstorm.
Gold Coast beat Richmond 12.15 (87) to 10.9 (69). Carlton was scheduled to play Port Adelaide on Sunday.
