84 Suspected Illegal Aliens Arrested at Meatpacking Plant
NORFOLK, Neb. (AP) _ Immigration officials raided a meatpacking plant early Friday and arrested 84 workers who are suspected illegal aliens.
The detainees, all Mexican, were taken by bus to a National Guard armory, said Jerry Heinauer, district director of the Immigration and Naturalization Service in Omaha.
They were to be held pending deportation hearings or until transportation back to Mexico could be arranged, he said.
About 40 immigration agents and 30 officers from law enforcement agencies raided the the BeefAmerica plant before dawn in this city about 100 miles northwest of Omaha. BeefAmerica is the nation’s fifth-largest beef processor.
The company cooperated with the INS and was not expected to be fined, Heinauer said.
The raid was at least the third in the state in the past 15 months. A similar raid in March at an Excel Corp. plant ended with about 125 deportations, and 100 workers were arrested in Madison in May 1994 at an IBP Inc. pork plant.
