LOCAL COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Cougars, Colonels Meet Again For Spot In MAC Freedom Final

At Wilkes in the MAC Freedom softball tournament on Friday, Misericordia spilt a pair of games, beating the host Colonels 4-0 and losing to Manhattanville 6-1 in the winner’s bracket final.

Kiersten Pflueger homered in the victory, and Brooke Moyle pitched a five-hit shutout.

Wilkes kept its season alive by beating DeSales, 2-1. Rhiannon Aurand singled in Gracen Staunton in the sixth inning for the decisive run, and pitched three innings of scoreless relief.

It sets up a second meeting in as many days between the second-seeded Cougars and third-seeded Colonels. They’ll play in an elimination game at 11 a.m. today, with the winner facing Manhattanville for the championship, needing to beat the conference’s top seed twice.

Baseball

At West Lawn, top seed Misericordia opened the MAC Freedom championships with a 6-1 victory over King’s on Friday. Parker Abate, Billy Kerwien and Shane Hughes all had two hits.

Hughes and Tyler Holzapfel each had two RBIs in the game. Ian McCole got the win on the mound.

Misericordia plays No. 3 DeSales at 11 a.m. today for a spot in the championship. King’s faces No. 2 Manhattanville at 3 p.m. in an elimination game.

Track & Field

The Misericordia women’s team stands third after two days of competition at the MAC Championships. Reilly Wagner was second in the high jump and qualified for the finals of the 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles and 200-meter run.

Brenna Karnish was fourth in the discus.

On the men’s side, Tobi Olugbenga was second in the high jump and Chris Sabol fifth in the 3000 steeplechase.
