French Sprinter Cheval Suspended
PARIS (AP) _ French sprinter Christophe Cheval was suspended for two years Tuesday after testing positive for steroids at last month’s world championships.
The French track federation’s disciplinary commission said Cheval would be ineligible to compete until Aug. 12, 2003.
Cheval tested positive for nandrolone in two urine tests last month.
The International Association of Athletics Federations temporarily suspended Cheval after the first sample came back positive. It left the decision of whether the athlete should face a two-year suspension _ the standard penalty for the offense _ to the French federation.
Cheval told France’s L’Equipe newspaper last week that he had not knowingly taken the banned substance. He said that he had taken a food supplement that did not indicate it contained nandrolone.
