WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House has invited rank-and-file House Democrats to lunch with President Donald Trump, bypassing Speaker Nancy Pelosi as part of a strategy to peel off centrist and freshman lawmakers to support funding his U.S.-Mexico border wall. An aide says Pelosi gave lawmakers her blessing to attend Tuesday, telling her leadership team the group can see what she and others have been dealing with during the shutdown. Pelosi and her team have met several times with Trump during the 25-day shutdown.

BARRON, Wis. (AP) — A criminal complaint describes the terrifying ordeal of 13-year-old Jayme Closs, who heard her father being shot to death, watched as a stranger then turned the gun on her mother, then was dragged off to a remote cabin in northeastern Wisconsin. Jayme was held for almost three months, often trapped under a bed in her alleged captor’s bedroom for hours at a time. She escaped Thursday, and Jake Thomas Patterson was charged Monday with kidnapping and two counts of murder.
