Domestic Rig Count Up by 29
HOUSTON (AP) _ The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the United States jumped this week by 29 to 750.
Of the rigs running nationwide, 139 were exploring for oil, 609 for gas, and two were listed as miscellaneous, Houston-based Baker Hughes Inc. reported Friday. During the same week last year, 716 rigs were operating in the United States.
Baker Hughes has kept track of the count since 1944. The tally peaked at 4,530 on Dec. 28, 1981, during the height of the oil boom but set several record lows this earlier year, bottoming out at 498 on April 9.
Of the major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas posted the largest gain with 12, Oklahoma gained 10, New Mexico gained four and Louisiana gained one.
Wyoming lost two rigs. Rig counts in Alaska and California did not change.
