1 person drowns, 3 survive after boat overturns on river
BELMONT, N.C. (AP) — Authorities say one person drowned and three others made it to shore safely after a boat capsized in a North Carolina river.
Belmont Police Sgt. Brad Pickert told a news conference on Monday that a group of people was camping on an island on the Catawba River and were using the boat to take people back and forth to the shore before it took on water and sank.
Gaston County emergency personnel say rescue workers were called to a park on the river before sunrise Monday, and when they arrived, they found three people in the water. Officials say the body of the fourth person was recovered around 1 p.m.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is handling the investigation. So far, officials haven’t said what caused the incident.
