Dobie football team on pace to break single season school scoring record
Well, that record didn’t last long.
One week after scoring a school record 59 points against rival Pasadena, Dobie’s varsity football team shattered that mark by cruising past Humble 70-20 in a District 22-6A game at Veterans Memorial Stadium Friday night.
Now with 212 points for the season, Dobie is on pace to break the all-time single season school scoring record set two decades ago.
This is the quickest that a Longhorns team has reached 200 points in this, their golden anniversary of fielding a varsity squad.
Some Dobie teams have reached the 200-point plateau by Week 6, but never by Week 5.
Owners of the single season scoring record is the 1999 team, the only squad to score over 400 points. With the help of reaching the third round of the state playoffs, Dobie scored 413 points that fall. For the regular season, the Longhorns scored 355 points.
The 1999 team broke the single season scoring record set just the year before when the 1998 team scored 368 points with the help of another three contests in the postseason.
Among Dobie’s victims that fall was Humble High School when the Longhorns defeated the Wildcats 17-7 in the Astrodome for the Area crown.
The 2011 season currently ranks third with 361 points, aided by one round in the playoffs. For the regular season however, Dobie scored 347 points, which ranks second in the 49 years of Longhorns football.
Another motivation for Dobie to keep up the scoring is the fact that the program is four victories shy of 200 district wins.
In addition, this weekend’s win inched Dobie one victory closer to another milestone win. It was the program’s 290th overall victory.
