Yellowstone County jail pays $37K to settle ex-inmate’s suit
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Yellowstone County officials have agreed to pay $37,500 to a former jail inmate who claimed he was beaten by a detention officer.
The Billings Gazette reports Joshua Wilson filed a federal lawsuit in June 2017 against the Yellowstone County Detention Center, claiming a detention officer put him in a chokehold and hit his head against a wall.
Wilson claimed the May 2016 encounter occurred after he refused to enter his cell because the toilet had overflowed and sewer water covered the floor.
According to court documents, an investigation determined the officer had used excessive force. The officer was placed on a 40-hour unpaid suspension, and he later resigned.
The county does not admit to any liability in the settlement.
Yellowstone County Attorney Scott Twito did not return the newspaper’s calls.
