Some Vegas students walk out for 17 minutes over gun debate

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Students at one Las Vegas high school staged a walkout to protest gun violence, despite a warning from administrators that missing class would make them ineligible for a day’s after-school sports and activities.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that about 75 students gathered around the Silverado High School campus flag for 17 minutes on Wednesday to mark a Parkland, Florida, school shooting last week that left 17 dead.

The walkout in the nation’s fifth-largest school district offered an early glimpse of a possible national student walkout being organized for March 14.

Clark County School District officials have notified principals that students can’t walk out and attendance must be taken in every class.

District academic chief Mike Barton says administrators respect students’ views but want them to express their opinions safely.
