W. Va. Mine Blast Kills 3, Injures 3
CAMERON, W.Va. (AP) _ An explosion killed three people and injured three others who were digging an air shaft for an underground mine early Wednesday.
The explosion at McElroy Mining Co., a division of Consolidated Coal Co., occurred about 1 a.m., said Jeff Gunn, a Marshall County emergency dispatcher.
The six miners were about 1,000 feet underground when the explosion occurred. The three injured were brought to the surface by mine rescue teams.
The bodies of the three killed remained in the air shaft at 6:30 a.m., said Thomas Hoffman, vice president of investor and public relations for Pittsburgh-based Consolidation Coal.
The six people were employed by a contractor hired to dig the air shaft on Nauvoo Ridge in Marshall County.
