Mom Who Killed Baby Must See Grave
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) _ A 13-year-old girl who became pregnant after she was raped, and later killed her newborn son in a YMCA bathroom, was sentenced Monday to one year of supervision under a social worker.
Calling it a difficult case, Circuit Judge Benjamin Proctor also ordered the girl to visit the grave of her baby every month for the next year. The girl also must live in a foster home.
``He came up with a fair and a just decision,″ said the girl’s attorney, public defender Mary Liedtke. ``The facts are emotional but he applied the law. It is such a tragic case.″
The girl was found delinquent for reckless homicide for stuffing toilet paper in her son’s mouth and placing him in two plastic bags after giving birth in a stall of a bathroom at the YMCA on June 5.
A janitor found the infant’s body in two plastic bags, one inside the other, in a garbage can in the bathroom near the main lobby. An autopsy determined the baby died of asphyxiation and numerous skull fractures, court records said.
