Rio Hondo AFJROTC announces annual Veterans Day Ceremony

October 1, 2018

RIO HONDO — Air Force JROTC members are gearing up to host their annual Veterans Day event in November.

“They set up the place, chaperone the veterans and escort them to lunch,” said retired Air Force Lt. Col. Cliff Moriarty, who oversees the JROTC program.

The guest of honor for the event will be U.S. Rep. Congressman Filemon Vela, D-Brownsville.

“We are hoping for a full house,” Moriarty said. “The presentation should last under one hour.”

Moriarty said an email to the congressman’s local representative passed the message to Vela requesting he be the guest speaker at the school’s annual Veterans Day Event.

“Congressman Vela has done a good job for this district,” Moriarty said. “He comes from a long standing, well known family.”

Air Force JROTC cadets are eager to speak with the congressman to find out how more Rio Hondo students can attend military academies.

The event is free and the public is welcome to attend. The ceremony will take place in the Rio Hondo High School gymnasium.

Veterans and their spouses are invited to stay for lunch at the Air Force JROTC Hanger after the presentation.

Moriarty said he expects the bulk of the veterans in attendance to be Vietnam veterans.

“But we do have WWII and Korean Veterans,” Moriarty said. “The youngest ones are in their 90s.”
