Man Survived One Plane Crash, Died In Second With PM-Delta Crash
MIAMI (AP) _ A man who died in the crash of Delta Air Lines Flight 191 was the only survivor of a private plane crash eight years ago that killed six members of his family.
″We spent the first hour after hearing the news figuring what the odds of something like this could be,″ said Bob Guterma, 33, brother of Marc Guterma, who was among 132 Delta passengers who died in Friday’s crash.
″We came to the conclusion that it was impossible,″ he said.
Only Bob Guterma stayed behind when seven members of his family flew to New York City aboard a Mitsubishi turbo-prop in 1977 to see a circus. The plane crashed four miles from LaGuardia Airport in light rain and heavy fog.
Marc Guterma was the sole survivor of the crash, which killed his father, mother, and four brothers and sisters.
In both crashes, only the tail of the plane remained intact.
In the 1977 crash, Guterma suffered a broken arm, leg, neck and shoulder. Doctors didn’t tell him he had lost most of his family for two days.
Then 14, Guterma healed, went on to finish high school and moved to Colorado and then Utah, pursuing interests in music and computers.
But Friday, Guterma was killed in the crash of the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar that went down in a heavy thunderstorm while attempting to land at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
The Delta crash took the lives of 132 passengers and a driver who was heading home in traffic.
