US Rep. Miller concerned about refugee relocation

July 12, 2014

VASSAR, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan member of Congress says it’s “deeply troubling” to hear that refugee children from Central America could be sent to the state.

The Detroit News (http://bit.ly/1r65w3D) reports that U.S. Rep. Candice Miller sent a letter Friday to the Department of Health and Human Services. The Macomb County Republican is a senior member of the House Homeland Security Committee.

A social services group is interested in using a 145-bed facility in Vassar, near Saginaw, to house some of the thousands of children who have entered the United States. Vassar is not in Miller’s district, but her letter states that the government is considering several Michigan cities.

Miller wants a meeting with government officials if they can’t answer her questions. She’s especially concerned about communications between the government and local communities.
