Lindsey Graham laughs off 2017 vow of ‘hell to pay’ if Jeff Sessions is fired

November 9, 2018

Sen. Lindsey Graham on Thursday night laughed off a Fox News host’s questions about his 2017 pledge that there would “be hell to pay” if President Trump fired former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

The South Carolina Republican was pressed about the statement by Fox News’ Martha MacCallum one day after Mr. Sessions was asked to resign.

Mr. Graham responded with a laugh and asked, “so when was that? What year?”

When told it was made in July 2017, Mr. Graham repeated that the president deserves an attorney general in whom he has “confidence.”

“What I’ve been saying for months is that every president deserves an attorney general they confidence in and they can work with,” he said. “I like Jeff Sessions. I’ve known Jeff for a long time. I hope he goes and runs for his old Senate seat in Alabama. It’s clear to me it’s not working and was not working between Attorney General Sessions and President Trump.”

Mr. Graham added that the Senate will continue to protect special counsel Robert Mueller from interference or even being fired by the Trump administration.
