NEW YORK (AP) _ The International Amateur Athletic Association will hold its World Cup team walking championships May 2-3 in New York’s Central Park, the first time the event will be held in North America.
Walkers from more than 30 nations will be entered in both men’s and women’s team races.
The races will be conducted by the New York Road Runners Club.
BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) - Fidel Bassa of Colombia will defend his World Boxing Association flyweight championship against Britain’s Dave McAuley at King’s Hall April 25, it was announced Tuesday.
It will be Bassa’s first defense of the title he won last month from Hilario Zapata of Panama.
Both fighters are unbeaten, Bassa in 17 fights and McAuley in 19.
McAuley, from Northern Ireland, won the British flyweight championship last October with a ninth-round knockout of Joe Kelly of Scotland.
SORRENTO, Italy (AP) - Giuseppe Petito outsprinted fellow Italians Maurizio Rossi and Alessando Paganessi at the finish line Tuesday to win the 55th edition of the Tour of Campania road cycling race.
Veteran aces Francesco Moser and Giuseppe Saronni, and world champion Moreno Argentin all withdrew. The race was held in cold weather with snow falling in some parts of the 130-mile course.
The 27-year-old Italian covered the distance in five hours, 33 minutes, 46 seconds, at an average speed of 23 mph.
