Motorist charged with hitting, killing pedestrian outside Delmont Walmart
A Mississippi motorist has been charged with striking and killing a female pedestrian Friday in front of the Walmart in Delmont.
Murrysville police have charged Wendy Lee Shumaker, 49, of Philadelphia, Miss., with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence in the accident in the parking lot of the store, which is off Hollywood Boulevard in Murrysville. The crash occurred at about 1:50 p.m., Westmoreland County emergency dispatchers reported.
According to a complaint and affidavit filed by police, a Penn Township emergency medical provider said in a written statement that he’d witnessed Shumaker’s pickup truck drive twice over the pedestrian and that “he had to slap the truck while yelling at the driver to get her to stop.”
The pedestrian was taken to Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, where she died, police said. Her identity could not be confirmed from court documents.
Police said, when the arrived, emergency crews were providing assistance to the pedestrian at a crosswalk in front of the store.
A breath test police conducted on Shumaker yielded a positive result for alcohol. Police said Shumaker had an odor of alcohol on her breath and agreed to provide a blood sample for testing.
Shumaker acknowledged that she takes medicine for anxiety and a back problem, and police found morphine and other drugs in her purse
Shumaker was arraigned before District Judet Mark Mansour and was placed in the Westmoreland County Jail after failing to post $150,000 bail.
