MARSEILLE, France (AP) _ Three-time Marseille Open winner Marc Rosset began his title defense with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 first-round victory over Italy's Gianluca Pozzi on Tuesday.

Rosset, of Switzerland, has the best record on French soil of any active player with seven of his 15 career titles won in France.

``This is obviously a tournament I enjoy'' Rosset said. ``But I'm lacking confidence right now, so I was happy to get through in three sets today.''

Rosset has a potentially tough second-round match with France's Julien Boutter who beat French qualifier Lionel Roux 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.

French qualifier Jean-Rene Lisnard beat Justin Gimelstob, one of three Americans in the draw 7-6 (5), 6-2 and will face countryman Cedric Pioline, who beat Spain's Juan Balcells 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

American qualifier Bob Bryan upset France's Nicolas Escude 6-7 (6), 7-6 (4), 6-4 to move into the second round.

The top three seeds _ Sweden's Magnus Norman, Russia's Yevgeni Kafelnikov and France's Arnaud Clement will be in action Wednesday.
