Rhode Island man facing fentanyl distribution charges

August 27, 2019

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Federal prosecutors have charged a Rhode Island man with supplying the fentanyl that contributed to the overdose death of a Massachusetts man.

Authorities on Tuesday said 23-year-old David Grimaldi, of West Warwick, has been charged with distribution of fentanyl.

According to court documents, authorities say 27-year-old Nicholas Bateman, of Rochester, Massachusetts, ingested one half of one of three pills allegedly sold to him by Grimaldi in July 2017.

Bateman quickly became unresponsive and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The Rhode Island Medical Examiner determined that Bateman died as a result of the toxic effects of alcohol and fentanyl.

Grimaldi will be arraigned in U.S. District Court at a later date. No attorney was listed in court documents.
