Fish Flee in Flood
NATCHITOCHES, La. (AP) _ The story about the fish that got away has a new twist - Tom Foshee says he lost 500,000 head of channel catfish when they swam off in rising flood waters.
The Natchitoches Parish fish farmer said this week that all but about 10 of the 160 acres of catfish ponds he has in production were flooded when heavy rains topped the levees.
″We can handle a heavy rainfall, but this was probably a once in a 100- year deal,″ he said of the floods that hit his catfish farm last month.
Foshee also had to drain the flooded ponds to get rid of bass, crappie, gar, carp and various other species brought in by the high water. Those fish feed on young catfish.
He said the flooding will cost him about $250,000.
Foshee said he has some catfish left, ″so we’re still able to operate. But right now, we’re mainly running the hatchery trying to get as many young ones as we can.″
