Cubs 5, Padres 4
MESA, Ariz. (AP) _ The Chicago Cubs ended a four-game Cactus League losing streak Sunday by defeating the San Diego Padres 5-4 at HoHoKam Park. But Cubs’ pitching ace Rick Sutcliffe suffered another in a string of injuries that began last season.
On the first pitch of the game, Sutcliffe was struck on the right thumb by a one-hop grounder off the bat of San Diego’s lead-off hitter, Tim Flannery. Sutcliffe left the game immediately and was taken to a local hospital for X- rays.
″I was just trying to knock it down,″ said Sutcliffe, who spent three tours on the disbled list last season with shoulder and hamstring injuries. ″I just saw the ball ... reached to catch it, and it came up. The next thing I know, my thumb puffs all up,″ he said.
Sutclifffe was followed on the mound by Dick Ruthven, George Frazier and Lee Smith. Smith, 1-0, was credited with the victory after Cubs’ catcher Steve Lake doubled in the eighth inning to drive in Chris Speir with the winning run.
Padres’ left-hander Gene Walter, 0-1, was charged with the loss.
