The Recount Process in Florida

November 9, 2000

The recount of Florida’s presidential votes was triggered by state law because George Bush led Al Gore by less than one-half of 1 percent.

The automatic recount was being conducted by all 67 county election departments. They were expected to complete the recount by Thursday night.

Each county reports its result to the Florida Secretary of State’s office in Tallahassee, where they will be compiled and certified.

The election will not be over until at least Nov. 17. That’s the deadline for approximately 2,000 mail ballots cast by Floridians living overseas to be received by their home counties. Those that were postmarked by Election Day will be counted.

There can be no recount of the recount _ the only way either candidate could challenge the result would be in court.
