No. 15 Wisconsin Beats Penn 64-53
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Devin Harris scored 16 points, including a three-point play late in the game, and No. 15 Wisconsin beat Penn 64-53 on Friday night.
Zach Morley and Freddie Owen added 12 points apiece for the Badgers, who opened the season without injured forward Alando Tucker.
Jeff Schiffner led Penn with 20 points, including three 3-pointers.
Schiffner tied the game 40-all with 11:28 to play with a 3-pointer, and the Quakers stayed within four points until 2:55 remained. That’s when Harris hit a runner in the lane and was fouled. He hit the free throw and Wisconsin led by five.
Owens followed with a pair of layups and a free-throw to put the game away for the Badgers.
Wisconsin hit just 17 of 28 free-throw attempts, and Owens, an 82 percent free-throw shooter last season, was 2 of 8 against Penn.
Morley, a junior-college transfer, had 10 first-half points after coming off the bench three minutes into the game. He also had four offensive rebounds.
Early in the first half, Harris hit a 3-pointer on an attempted alley-oop pass to Morley that gave Wisconsin its first lead of the game, 17-15. It came in the midst of an 12-0 run that put the Badgers up by nine.
Tim Begley hit a first-half, buzzer-beater from just inside the half-court line to cut the Wisconsin lead to eight.
Jan Fikiel added 10 points for Penn.
