Driver shot multiple times on Interstate 77 before crashing near Akron

AKRON, Ohio -- The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a man was shot several times Saturday on Interstate 77, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

Deputies responded about 9:55 p.m. Saturday for a call about a silver BMW crashed into a guardrail on Interstate 77 northbound in Coventry Township near the East Waterloo Road exit in Akron, according to the press release.

The driver, a 22-year-old man from Akron, appeared to be unconscious as he slumped over the center console of the BMW, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies forced open the vehicle and removed the driver who had multiple gunshot wounds and was showing no signs of life. 

Deputies performed first aid until the Coventry Fire Department arrived, and the man was revived on the scene. He was brought to Akron City Hospital and is expected to survive, the sheriff’s office said. 

Investigators determined the shooting happened near the Wilbeth Road exit in Akron, the sheriff’s office said. They have not yet released the victim’s identity.
