Southern fends off Palmyra in C2-1 Subdistrict

Southern fended off a late Palmyra comeback attempt to advance in the C2-1 Subdistrict.

The second-seeded Raiders defeated third-seeded Palmyra 61-55 Tuesday night at Beatrice High School.

With the win, Southern advances to play top-seeded Freeman Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. in the subdistrict final. Freeman advanced by beating Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer 51-23 earlier in the night.

Southern and Palmyra traded leads several times in the first quarter. Carson Borzekofski and Nicholas Lyons gave the Raiders an early 4-0 lead with back-to-back baskets, but Palmyra answered with the next four points.

Lyons then scored again, but five straight points by Palmyra made it 9-6 in favor of the Panthers. Southern’s Drake Adams scored four of the game’s next six points to make it 11-10. Riley Wegner then answered a Palmyra basket to make it 13-12 after one quarter.

The Panthers extended their lead to 17-12 early in the second quarter, but Southern scored the next eight points. Braden Klover had a put back basket and Lyons had a fast break lay up to start the run.

Two straight baskets by Adams gave Southern a 20-17 lead. Palmyra ended the run with a three pointer, but a basket by Klover and a three pointer by Lyons made it 25-20.

After a Palmyra basket, a free throw by Lyons and a three pointer by Borzekofski extended Southern’s lead to 29-22.

Lyons finished the first half with a three pointer, making the score 32-23 at half time.

Southern extended their lead to 35-23 after three straight points by Lyons to start the third quarter.

Palmyra wouldn’t go away, though. They scored the next eight points to make it 36-31. Adams finally ended the run with a three pointer.

After two free throws by Palmyra, Klover scored on a put back basket and Borzekofsk hit a three pointer to re-extend the Southern lead back to 44-33.

Palmyra ended the third quarter with a 7-3 run to make it 47-40. Southern’s three points came on Jacob Shepardson’s three pointer.

The Panthers made it 47-44 early in the fourth quarter, but four straight points by Riley Wegner and a fast break lay up by Lyons re-extended the Raider lead back to 53-44.

Palmyra’s pressure defense allowed them to go on a 9-0 run to tie the game 53-53 with 3:00 left in the game.

Lyons knocked down a jumper with 1:19 left to give Southern a two point lead. The Raiders then forced a turnover and Adams knocked down two free throws to make it 57-53 with 40.2 seconds left.

After another Panther turnover, Lyons hit two free throws to make it 59-53 with 25 seconds left. They would hold on for the 61-55 win.

Lyons led the way for Southern with 25 points while Adams had 13, Borzekofski had eight, Klover and Wegner had six each and Shepardson had three.

The winner of Thursday night’s Southern/Freeman game will advance to a district final game where they’ll have a chance to advance to state with a win. Freeman will advance to a district final game regardless of Thursday’s outcome due to their standing in the Class C2 power point rankings
