Schett, Tauziat Reach Kremlin Final
MOSCOW (AP) _ Fourth-seeded Nathalie Tauziat of France fired nine aces to beat Lisa Raymond of the United States 6-4, 6-2 Saturday and reach the final of the $1.05 million Kremlin Cup.
Tauziat will face second-seeded Barbara Schett of Austria in Sunday’s final. Schett defeated fifth-seeded Dominique Van Roost of Belgium 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) in the other semifinal.
Tauziat, ranked 10th in the world, played a net-and-volley game and never allowed Raymond to break her serve.
``My game is inconvenient for her,″ Tauziat said. ``I was serving better, I was returning better, I read her game better.″
Raymond, a doubles specialist, and Tauziat both held serve until the 10th game of the first set. Then Raymond made two critical mistakes on her serve, sending backhand volleys into the net at deuce.
``I can’t explain why,″ Raymond said. ``In the past three matches I was volleying very well, and today ... It’s difficult to go into the semifinal against someone you’ve never beaten before. And it’s especially difficult for me to play her, because she doesn’t give you the rhythm.″
Tauziat broke Raymond early in the second set and sent a forehand down the line at deuce in the eighth game to end the match and reach her second final this year.
Van Roost, ranked 12th in the world, double-faulted in the 12th game to lose the first set. She then took a 4-1 lead in the second but lost four games in a row and trailed 4-5.
Schett, No. 8 in the world, then went on to beat Van Roost for the first time.
Schett has beaten Tauziat three times this year, but Sunday’s final will be their first on a carpet surface.
