Undated (AP) _ Sudden Impulse, a lightly raced invader from Pennsylvania, upset the $15,000 Sporting Powder Purse at Pimlico Race Course Thursday.

The 3-year-old daughter of 1975 Preakness winner Master Derby led all the way with jockey Ben Winnet to complete five furlongs over the turf in :59 1-5.

Absurd Bird, the co-favorite in the field of seven fillies and mares, finished a length back in second and Diamondsareagirls, the other co-choice, was another length farther behind in third.

Sudden Impulse paid $31.60, $7.40 and $4; Absurd Bird $4 and $2.60; Diamondsareagirls, $3.20.

Storm and Sunshine, 121 and Craig Perret, the even-money favorite, held on to post a head victory in the $172,500 Test Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Saratoga.

Classy Cathy, 121 and Earlie Fires, was runner-up two lengths ahead of I’m Sweets, 121 and Jerry Bailey.

For Storm and Sunshine the victory was her fourth in five starts this year and the third consecutive stakes triumph. The daughter Star de Naskra-Sea Drone earned $103,500 for owner-breeder Woodcrest and returned $4.20, $2.80 and $2.40.

Classy Cathy was $3.80 and $3 while I’m Sweets paid $4 to show.

Esteem took the lead at the half-mile pole and went on to win the $10,800 allowance race by three lengths at Ellis Park.

With jockey Eugene Sipus Jr. in the irons, Esteem covered the six furlongs in 1:12 3-5 and paid $7.60, $4 and $3.40. Son Plaiser returned $7.60 and $4, while Kwhai paid $3.80 to show.

Balladry, ridden by Pat Valenzuela, broke in the final yards to pass Our Best Tell and win the $35,000 feature race by a head at Del Mar.

Our Best Tell, with Chris McCarron in the saddle, finished 1 1/4 lengths in front of Bold N Special in the 6 1/2 f-urlongs test for fillies and mares, 3- years-old and up.

Carrying 115 pounds, Balladry ran the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15 on a fast track to defeat five rivals and win $19,250.

Sent off the second choice by 15,592 fans, Balladry paid $5.60, $3.60 and $3. Our Best Tell paid $8.60 and $4, while Bold N Special returned $3 to show.
