ALA unit plans meeting Thursday
American Legion Auxiliary Pitterle-Beaudoin Unit 189 will meet Thursday at the post, 206 S. First St., Watertown.
February is Americanism Month. This program seeks to inspire, recognize and perpetuate responsible citizenship through education and acts of patriotism, as well as raising awareness and increasing appreciation of the price paid for American freedoms.
Some of the areas promoted in this program are flag etiquette, proper flag display and disposal, Flag Day, Americanism in schools, veterans in schools projects, study of the U.S. Constitution, patriotic holidays, Badger Girls State, history of the Pledge of Allegiance and the annual Americanism Essay Contest.
“George Washington’s birthday was established as a federal holiday in 1885, celebrating his life and contributions to the country,” stated a media release from the ALA unit. “States expanded the holiday to commemorate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, which has become Presidents Day on the third Monday of February, and a great day to fly the flag.”
Members are reminded of the 2nd District Americanism project, which is to wear red, white and blue to the February meeting for a group picture. The meeting night also falls on Valentine’s Day, so February’s “Fun Night” will focus on valentines.
A brief Americanism program will be presented, an overview of the Valentine Brunch will be given and tickets will be available for the Legion’s March Birthday Party.
