EPA investigating dry cleaning chemicals in Burlington

August 8, 2018

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency says it is investigating the presence of underground chemical vapors near an elementary school in Burlington, Vermont.

The chemicals in question are carcinogens that historically have been used by dry cleaning operations in an area where the dry cleaner store closed nearly 30 years ago. The Burlington Free Press reports the chemicals could have seeped into the ground and may be present in the school and surrounding area.

EPA workers began chemical tests Monday at an elementary school and a nearby home. Workers will also be collecting samples from other outdoor areas.

Late last year, health officials tested six child-care facilities and preschools located within 200 feet of a dry cleaner for chemical contamination as a precaution.
