Local deputy shot at in Barstow
NEEDLES — A Colorado River Station deputy of the San Bernardino County Sheriff Department was nearly struck by a vehicle, then exchanged gunfire with a fleeing suspect in Barstow on May 4.
The Needles station reported the deputy was on duty shortly before noon, en route to Needles, when the near-collision occurred. Initiating a traffic stop reports indicated a passenger in the vehicle, a 35-year-old Barstow man armed with a handgun, attempted to run; ignoring orders to halt then turning and firing multiple shots at the deputy, who returned fire.
Reinforcements from the sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Detail arrived, conducted a search, and found his hiding spot. The suspect, unhurt, was booked into the Barstow jail charged with attempted murder of a police officer.
Investigation continues. Anyone with information should call Det. Eric Ogaz of the sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division, 909-387-3589; or anonymously through the We-Tip-Hotline at 800-78-CRIME (27463), or via internet at www.wetip.com.
