Explosion at Factory Kills Five

November 25, 1987

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) _ A fire at an explosives factory set off eight tons of dynamite, killing five workers and injuring six, officials said Wednesday.

Police were investigating the explosion, which occurred Tuesday night near Bronkhorstpruit in the black homeland of KwaNdebele, northeast of Pretoria.

The town clerk, Hennie Senekal, said the blast came during a thunderstorm and suggested the fire at the National Explosives plant may have been caused by lightning.
