Five Shot - 3 Fatally - in Staten Island Building

November 12, 1987

NEW YORK (AP) _ Three people were shot and killed Wednesday and two others, including a 3- year-old boy, were wounded at a Staten Island apartment building, police said.

The shootings occurred about 7 p.m. in a fifth-floor apartment and outer hallway of the building, said police Sgt. Raymond O’Donnell.

Details were remained sketchy late Wednesday, but police Sgt. John Venetucci said the incident began when police received a call about a man shot on a fifth-floor landing.

The victim told police who arrived at the scene that a woman was shot in the apartment. Inside the apartment, officers discovered a man dead on the kitchen floor and two others victims, a woman and man, dead in the bedroom, Venetucci said. All had been shot in the head.

The 3-year-old, believed to be the woman’s son, was found in the same bedroom lying on the bed, police said.

″The bullet entered through his back and exited his body,″ said Ray Pohlod, a spokesman at St. Vincent’s Hospital. The child was alert and his condition was satisfactory, Pohlod said.

During the investigation, the wounded man who had been on the landing fled to another building but was later discovered, O’Donnell said.

A hospital administrator, who refused to give her name, said the man was being called John Doe and was in fair condition at Staten Island Hospital with a single gunshot wound. She had no other information.

O’Donnell said a 9mm automatic handgun and a hunting knife were recovered in the apartment.

″It appears the location is a drug location,″ O’Donnell said, about the building, but added that the shooting apparently was not drug related.

None of the victims’ identities was immediately known.
