Meet this year’s OYW contestants

April 3, 2019

The Cambria-Somerset County’s Outstanding Young Woman Scholarship Program for the Class of 2020 will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center. The theme is “Masquerade.” The master of ceremonies will be Jim Penna. Tickets will be available at the door the night of the program

“The girls are again gearing up for an entertaining program,” Melissa Bird, president of the OYW board of directors, said in a written statement. “We have 27 talented young ladies from Cambria and Somerset counties vying for scholarship money in the program, and the high level of talent will certainly wow our audience!”

Significant scholarship amounts will be given to the winners of the program. Scholarship, interview, performing arts, aerobic fitness and presence and presentation are all weighted equally in selecting the winner. This year’s program will select a winner to represent Cambria County and a winner to represent Somerset County. The winner from each county will receive $5,000 in scholarship money as well as many scholarship offers from local colleges and universities. The first runner-up from each county will receive $3,500, with the second runner-up receiving $2,500.

“We will be giving away more than $22,000 in scholarship money in one evening,” Bird said. “We are proud of the young ladies in this program who raised the money to be able to give back in the form of scholarship.”

Somerset County’s representatives are finalists 1-13. Cambria County’s finalists are 14-27. Finalists from the first grouping will not compete with finalists from the second grouping. Winners will be selected by county.
