Gouveia to Succeed Atkins in the 14th
CHELMSFORD -- Acton Democrat Tami Gouveia will succeed Cory Atkins as the next state representative of the 14th Middlesex District.
With results for only a few precincts available about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Gouveia appeared poised for a landslide victory over Green-Rainbow Party candidate Danny Factor, also of Acton.
In Concord Precincts 1 and 4 and Chelmsford Precinct 1, Gouveia had received a total of about 3,831 votes to Factor’s approximately 358.
There was no Republican candidate in the race.
Reached by phone Tuesday night, Factor said he called Gouveia to concede the race and congratulate her on her victory about 9 p.m.
“I told her what an absolute pleasure and honor it was running against her,” Factor said. “We’ve worked together in the past, and I know we’ll be working together in the future, and I wish her the absolute best.”
As opponents, they treated each other with civility and respect, he said. Factor said he thought the race, which allowed him as a Green Party candidate more visibility than he might otherwise have, gave voters a view of what a multi-party system can look like.
Gouveia could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday night. During her campaign, she highlighted her career as a public health social worker, her previous leadership of Tobacco Free Mass and experience with working on legislation and consensus building as advantages for her to take over the role of state rep.
The 14th Middlesex District consists of Concord, Carlisle, Chelmsford Precincts 1 and 9 and Acton Precincts 1, 2 and 6.
At the Chelmsford polls, many voters expressed their support of Gouveia as part of a Democratic vote down the ticket.
Precinct 1 voter David Merens said he felt compelled to vote party line as a way to support issues that are important to him, such as health care and climate change.
Prior to the general election, Gouveia beat two other Democratic hopefuls, Acton’s Benjamin Bloomenthal and Concord’s Christian Krueger, in the September primary.
