County reaches tentative deal on new criminal justice center
DETROIT (AP) — A tentative agreement has been reached on a new criminal justice center north of downtown Detroit.
The deal between Wayne County and Rock Ventures also includes a 2,280-bed jail, sheriff and prosecutor offices, criminal courthouse and juvenile detention facility.
The project is to be completed in 2022. The county’s commission and building authority still must approve the deal.
Rock Ventures will be responsible for about $153 million of the project’s $533 million cost. In exchange, the company will get the sites of two current jails, a juvenile detention facility and county courthouse. Wayne County will continue to use those facilities until the criminal justice center is complete.
Rock Ventures also will get the site of an unfinished county jail project where it plans a major, mixed use development.
