BMW Opens First Showroom in China
BEIJING (AP) _ The German luxury car manufacturer BMW has opened its first showroom in China.
The event coincided with the visit of German Chancellor Helmut Kohl to China this week to promote trade with his country.
The showroom, located in a five-star German joint-venture hotel, has two BMWs on display.
″The showroom represents a very significant step forward for BMW into what we see as a market with enormous potential,″ the official China Daily newspaper quoted the company’s China director, Horst-Henning Wolf, as saying at the opening Tuesday in Beijing.
BMW’s sole dealer in China, Automobile Bavarian China Ltd., said it sold about 1,000 cars last year and about 800 so far this year.
Rival luxury car makers such as Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz also have stepped up business in China this year by opening dealerships.
