Meemo’s Bakery & Cafe relocates into bigger space, with bigger menu

When an Alamo Heights bakery was forced to relocate, it decided that the move was the perfect opportunity to expand the business from cakes and sugary treats into a full breakfast and lunch operation, too.

Meemo’s Bakery & Cafe had to leave its former location inside a converted home on Sunset Road after the land it was sitting on was sold. Owner Amber Palacios found a new spot less than three miles away at 2611 Wagon Wheel, just outside Loop 410 off Nacogdoches Road. It’s the former space of D’lish, which closed about a year ago.

“When we started looking, I didn’t want to go too far, because I had built up clientele,” Palacios said. “You move too far, you lose business. That’s just the way it is.”

The new space, which has been up and running for a few weeks, expands operations from 1,000 square feet into about 3,000, with an extensive dining area.

Meemo’s specializes in custom cakes, but there’s a wide assortment of freshly baked cookies and cupcakes inside the display case. The space has two kitchens so the cafe and bakery sides of the operations don’t interfere with one another. Everything is made from scratch.

Palacios’ husband, Andrew Gonzalez, runs the cafe side of things. The breakfast (served all day) menu features fun items such as Death by Chocolate ($9.99) and Fruity Pebble French toast ($5.99) and breakfast hot dogs ($5.99), but also gets serious with a lineup of breakfast skillet meals (from $9.99) and a popular croque madame ($9.99).

The lunch menu focuses on a lineup of six salads, homemade soups that rotate daily and all classic sandwiches, from pimento cheese to egg salad and traditional clubs. There also are three sandwiches dubbed “grown-up grilled cheese,” including a jalapeño popper sandwich ($9.99).
