Heard on the Street: New showroom to display decorative stone panels

November 27, 2018

A new southwest Rochester showroom will soon display thin panels of marble, onyx and quartz for homeowners and builders to use in decorative projects.

Jonathan Zimmerman says his soon-to-open Zimprovements showroom at 6747 10th Ave. SW will feature displays of Stonworks panels, which he now sells as a distributor of DesignerStone Panels.

The 2,500-square-foot showroom, located near the Rochester International Airport, is expected to open in January with a staff of five. He hopes to eventually grow his team to 10 or 12.

The showroom will also feature displays for other Zimprovements businesses, such as Polytek Surface Coatings, Red Nose Lighting and Rochester Outdoor Living.

Stonworks will fill about 60 percent of the showroom.

DesignerStone Panels, of Ontario, Canada, makes large decorative stone panels that are much lighter and easier to work with than traditional slabs of stone. It cuts thin panels of natural stone and adheres them to a lighter backing.

The result is “real stone that’s 80 percent lighter,” said Zimmerman.

He added that Stonworks products are best for the vertical uses like bathrooms, backsplashes, fireplaces, coffee tables and wine displays.

In addition to being easier to install, light can also be shown through the large, colorful panels.

“When backlit, it is just amazing,” said Zimmerman. “It’s a unique product that can be used very creatively.”
