Man found dead in home; others found bedridden
VARNEY, W.Va. — Charges are pending against a woman after police and Adult Protective Service workers found a man dead in his home Tuesday in Varney, West Virginia, which is near the town of Delbarton.
West Virginia State Police said they found a man dead and two other family members bedridden and in need of medical attention.
The report said the State Police was assisting Adult Protective Service when they found the body of George Blair, 60, of Varney, in his home. The report states the man appeared to have been dead for ″an extended period of time.″
“This is one of the worst cases of neglect I’ve ever worked,” said investigating officer Sgt. M.S. Lively of the Williamson detachment.
Investigators also found a 58-year-old woman, the victim’s wife, and a 38-year-old man, the victim’s son, bedridden inside the home and in need of medical treatment. Both victims were taken to Appalachian Regional Healthcare in South Williamson, Kentucky. The son was later transferred to Pikeville Regional Medical Center, according to Lively.
Troopers also found two dogs in the home that were tied to interior door handles. Animal Control removed the dogs from the home.
The incident is under investigation. While no charges have been filed, troopers said a woman was in charge of caring for the family.
Lively said he has been in contact with the Mingo County Prosecutor’s Office concerning the case.
