MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) _ Senior quarterback Daryl Dickey threw two touchdown passes as the 19th- ranked Tennessee defeated Memphis State 17-7 in a college football game Saturday.

Dickey completed eight of 16 passes for 128 yards, with seven completions in the first half. His only second-half completion lost three yards.

The victory, before 49,617 fans at the Liberty Bowl, was the 10th in the 10-game series for the Vols. Tennessee now is 5-1-2 for the season. Memphis State fell to 2-6-2.

All the scoring came in the first half.

The closest the Tigers came to scoring was on a drive that reached the Vols 11 early in the final period. But the march fizzled, and Thomas Ingles missed a 29-yard field goal attempt.

The Vols scored first with a 24-yard field goal by Carlos Reveiz. It was set up by a Memphis State fumble on a Tennessee punt to the Tigers' 16.

Memphis State's only touchdown came just before the end of the first quarter when Danny Hawkins grabbed a blocked punt and raced 24 yards into the end zone.

Tennessee regained the lead with a 78-yard drive that ended with Dickey's 19-yard touchdown pass to Tim McGee.

The Vols added a touchown just before the half on a 88-yard drive and another Dickey pass. That was a 9-yard toss to split end Eric Swanson.
