Man claims to be Chris Watts’ lover, saying he suffered emotional abuse
A man is claiming to be the lover of Chris Watts, a Fayetteville native who is charged in the deaths of his wife and two young daughters.
Watts is facing three charges of first-degree murder, two counts of killing a child under 12, one count of unlawful termination of a pregnancy and three counts of tampering with a deceased body in connection with the deaths of his pregnant wife and two children. Now, a man claiming to be Watts’ lover is saying the accused told him he was a victim of emotional abuse.
“Let’s go on record saying I don’t know if any of it is the truth, but he told me he was the victim of emotional and verbal abuse and he was trapped in a loveless marriage and he didn’t know any way out because of the kids,” said the man, who remained anonymous in his phone call to news outlets.
Police say Watts killed his kids and wife before dumping his daughters’ bodies in oil tanks at a remote oil site north of Denver. Later, Watts told police that his wife killed the girls, and he attacked her in rage.
The investigation into the deaths of the trio remain open.
Shanann Watts grew up in Aberdeen and had visited family and friends still living in North Carolina just weeks before her death. She attended Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines and married Chris in Charlotte in 2012.
