Police identify officer who fired shot during chase
Fort Wayne police identified an officer involved in a shooting at Oliver and Grier streets early Wednesday.
Officer Christopher Hawthorne fired his gun around 2 a.m. Wednesday during an incident with Shaquille I. Kelly, 26, whom police were pursuing, according to Sofia Rosales-Scatena, city police spokeswoman.
Police are still investigating whether the shot Hawthorne fired killed Kelly.
As he was being pursued, Kelly drove his car up on a lawn and through the front exterior of a home at Oliver and Grier streets. Kelly died of a gunshot wound to the chest and the Allen County coroner ruled his death a homicide.
Hawthorne was commissioned as an officer four years ago.
Hawthorne was given a letter of reprimand for a vehicle accident in 2016 and suspensions for vehicle accidents in 2017 and 2019.
He was given a meritorious service citation and letter of commendation in 2016.
The investigation is still ongoing, Rosales-Scatena said.
