TALLAHASSEE _ Instead of being sworn in with other senators elected in November, Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s schedule has him starting the day at 3:15 p.m. for two hours of “staff and call time.” But that’s a busy day for him lately. COLOMBIAN OFFICIAL-BRIBERY _ A former Colombian anti-corruption official has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to U.S. money-laundering conspiracy charges in a bribery scheme.

OBIT-MALCOLM BEARD _ Malcolm Elmore Beard, a former sheriff and Florida state senator, has died. He was 99. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that Beard died Thursday.

MISSING BOATERS _ The U.S. Coast Guard has stopped searching for a 9-year-old Haitian child and a suspected migrant smuggler in the waters off Florida.

MANATEE DEATHS _ Florida boaters killed a record number of manatees in 2018 and the state reported a near-record of manatee deaths overall.

UNIVERSITY LAWSUIT _ A former University of Florida faculty member accused of having a sexual relationship with a female graduate student is suing the school, saying it breached a confidentiality agreement.

HOTEL CLERK-ATTACK _ Police in South Florida are searching for a man they say attacked an overnight hotel clerk, choking her around the neck before a hotel guest scared him away.

GRANDSON KILLED _ Authorities say an 8-year-old Florida boy was killed when he was hit by a race car that his grandfather was pulling into a garage.

HOSPITAL WORKER KILLED _ A worker at a South Florida hospital was struck and killed by a car outside the emergency room.
