Troopers launch search for climbers missing near Juneau
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Alaska State Troopers in Juneau have launched a search for two experienced mountain climbers overdue from a trip.
A search is underway for 34-year-old George “Ryan” Johnson of Juneau and Marc-Andre Leclerc of British Columbia.
The men called Monday to report they had achieved their goal of climbing the Mendenhall Towers, peaks within the Mendenhall Ice Field. Cellphone access is available in parts of the area.
The men planned to ski and hike back to Juneau on the West Mendenhall Glacier Trail.
A snow storm hit Juneau on Wednesday. Troopers say neither man appeared to be carrying an emergency beacon or satellite phone.
Members of Juneau Mountain Rescue used a chartered helicopter to look for the men. The Coast Guard also is assisting.
Searchers found gear belonging to the climbers.
