EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) _ Glenn Anderson scored on a low wrist shot 36 seconds into overtime to give the Edmonton Oilers a 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets Tuesday night in the first game of the best-of-seven NHL Smythe Division final.
On the first rush of overtime, Anderson took a pass from Mark Messier near center ice, dashed across the blue line and unleased a partially-screened wrist shot. The puck slipped through the pads of Winnipeg goaltender Daniel Berthiaume. The goal was Anderson’s sixth of the playoffs and second of the game.
Winnipeg had only 16 shots against Edmonton goaltender Grant Fuhr, including only three in the third period.
Game 2 of the NHL series is Thursday night on the Oilers’ home ice.
Brian Mullen put the Jets ahead 2-1 at 11:27 of the second period, but Dave Hunter tied the score at 11:27. Maple Leafs 4, Red Wings 2
DETROIT (AP) - Toronto’s Rick Vaive tied the score in the second period and then assisted on Wendel Clark’s go-ahead goal as the Maple Leafs defeated the Detroit Red Wings, 4-2, in the first game of the Norris Division finals.
Ken Wregget, the red hot goalie who went all the way in the Maple Leafs’ six-game victory over St. Louis in the Norris semifinals, made 32 saves.
The second game of the best-of-seven NHL series will be played Thursday night on the Red Wings’ home ice.
Vaive scored his third goal of the playoffs at 1:25 of the period to tie the score 2-2, then assisted on Clark’s third goal at 5:02 that put the Maple Leafs ahead to stay. Todd Gill’s second goal at 7:55 put the Maple Leafs ahead 4-2 and Detroit pulled goalie Greg Stefan, who had faced 17 shots, in favor of Glen Hanlon.
