Lincoln man charged with murder in campus area killing

May 21, 2019

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln man has been charged with second-degree murder and other offenses in connection with the killing of a man near the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s East Campus.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports a judge on Monday set the bond for Michael D. Dewey at $2 million. Dewey is charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm to commit a felony, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and attempted escape from detention.

Dewey was accused of shooting and killing 47-year-old Desmond L. Fowler on Thursday morning.

Prosecutor Jan Lipovsky argued in court that Dewey shot Fowler “intentionally but without premeditation.”

Court documents say Dewey and another man were in the area in a failed attempt to buy drugs. Fowler began yelling at the other man and ran after them as they drove off, allegedly leading Dewey to shoot him.
