Albania: 10 former central bank ex-employees jailed
TIRANA, Albania (AP) — Ten former employees of Albania’s central bank have been jailed for between eight and 18 months after a court found them guilty on charges of abuse of office over the theft of 713 million leks ($5.7 million; 5 million euro) from the bank’s reserves.
A court in the capital Tirana issued minimum sentences Thursday following a plea bargain agreement with the defendants, who cooperated with the investigation.
The scandal led to the dismissal last year of Governor Ardian Fullani, who is currently awaiting trial along with nine other former employees on the same charge.
Earlier this month, the parliament elected Gent Sejko as the new governor.
