BYU’s Staley to Miss Liberty Bowl
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ Brigham Young running back Luke Staley will undergo surgery on his left ankle Tuesday and miss the Dec. 31 Liberty Bowl against Louisville.
The Doak Walker Award winner and consensus All-American damaged ligaments in his ankle Dec. 1 against Mississippi State, while breaking his fibula. The fracture is healing well, but surgery is needed to stabilize the ankle joint.
Staley’s backups, Ned Stearns and Paul Peterson, each broke a wrist last weekend at Hawaii. They are expected to play against Louisville, wearing rubberized casts.
