IN THE NEWS: ESPORTS - CHEATING
UNDATED (AP) — In just about any kind of competition, some people are known to cheat if they have a chance. And now, the head of the Esports Integrity Coalition says betting on battle royale games like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battleground could be vulnerable to cheating. That’s a big deal because e-sports gambling website Unikrn announced plans last month to bring legal skill-based betting to the U.S. — which means players can wager on themselves. ESIC Commissioner Ian Smith says such wagering is likely to be popular — but he’s concern that the industry could be exploited. For instance it’s possible that without strict controls, a player could placing a Fortnite bet using his or her account, then hand the controller over to a more talented friend.
IN THE NEWS: FACEBOOK - DEFINERS
NEW YORK (AP) — Facebook’s outgoing head of communications is taking the blame for hiring a public relations firm that does opposition research on the company’s critics. In a post that went up yesterday, Elliott Schrage says he was the one who hired Definers — as well as other firms doing similar things. Among the critics Definers helped dig up dirt on was billionaire philanthropist George Soros. Definers’ link to the Menlo Park, California, company was exposed in a story published by The New York Times earlier this month.
ON THE WEB: MACY’S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE
CYBERSPACE (AP) — It’s going to be a chilly — and perhaps a balloon-less — march down the streets of Manhattan for today’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. But assuming it does step off despite expected temperature readings well below freezing, there are tens of thousands expected to line the parade route. It will likely be a late call to decide whether the parade’s biggest stars — those huge character balloons — will be able to make the trek. High winds make them hard to control and if it’s too windy, the balloons will be grounded.
